Russian-speaking immigrants' vulnerable transnational family lives on the border: the case of North Karelia

Pirjo Pöllänen, Lauri Havukainen and Olga Davydova-Minguet

Chapter 5 in Assessing the Social Impact of Immigration in Europe, 2023, pp 77-92 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Transnational mobility changes the dynamics of people’s lives and customary family roles. In this chapter we investigate Russian speaking immigrants transnational everyday and familyhood in North Karelia, Finland during the geopolitical changes after 2014. The analysis is based on interviews, focus groups, discussions, and observations conducted in the MATILDE project. In addition, we use the authors’ long-term ethnographic material from the border region under scrutiny. The material is analysed thematically using ethnographic methods. The findings suggest that transnational family ties and everyday life survive and adapt even under dramatic geopolitical change. This chapter was written before the mobilization in Russia and the subsequent restrictions implemented at the Russian-Finnish border in September 2022. These latest occurrences will change the transnational lives in the border even further.
