Women in central banking: a focus on the controversial power–authority relation
Guillaume Vallet
Chapter 6 in Central Banking, Monetary Policy and Gender, 2024, pp 138-158 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The purpose of this chapter is to shed light on the persisting disparity in the position of women in central banks relative to men, relying throughout on Max Weber’s approach to power and authority. This framework helps to identify two obstacles faced by women in this milieu. The first obstacle has to do with women’s difficulties gaining access to institutions of power as outsiders. The second pertains to the discrepancy between power and authority that affects them upon becoming insiders: female central bankers persistently fall prone to an alleged lack of authority that denies them the degree of empowerment afforded to them. The chapter concludes by suggesting two proposals for promoting radical changes in central banking.
