The urban geography of artificial intelligence in Europe

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the geography of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in Europe and their urban genesis based on a patent data analysis that combines a textual approach with the browsing of technological classification codes. Specifically, the chapter advances the hypothesis that, in a general context of cumulative technology development favouring major technological centres and urban areas, AI can also develop in less technologically advanced and intermediate cities. The chapter proves this claim by exploiting an original dataset covering all AI patents – retrieved from the OECD-REGPAT in the period 2000–2015 – for all European cities, identified according to EUROSTAT's definition.
