AI, design and planning processes
Michael Batty
Chapter 2 in Handbook on Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Cities, 2025, pp 5-14 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter sketches the brief history of artificial intelligence (AI), emphasising the fact that it has always been assumed to have potential as a basis for planning, design and problem-solving in city planning. The history of AI has become more and more ‘black-box’-like as the focus on deep learning has become ever greater and as models – digital twins – have emerged that provide richer and richer methods and tools. To give some perspective to this history, we briefly examine network models that focus on learning and illustrate how these enable us to explore patterns in the data or help in generating patterns that imply some optimality in developing more sustainable and equitable cities. We make the point that simulating cities and simulating planning throws up the fact that AI has two very different uses in city planning, and a major quest is to explore how they may be integrated.
