Religious tourism: the journey so far
Kiran A. Shinde
Chapter 1 in A Research Agenda for Religious Tourism, 2024, pp 1-20 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Using the metaphor of a journey, this chapter provides a state-of-the-art review of literature and offers a critical reflection of the development of research on religious tourism in order to suggest newer terrains into which research on religious tourism is venturing. The chapter uses three conceptual categories of travel (and traveller), destination and origin as themes to organise the diverse and discursive ideas as discussed in the extant literature. It then highlights a few aspects that are left behind in this journey that need to be researched for a better and comprehensive understanding of religious tourism in future and thereby setting the tone of the book.
