Climate change and socio-environmental accounting in agri-food supply chains: a systematic review and future directions

Marcello Cosa and Andrea Caccialanza

Chapter 12 in Research Handbook on Accounting and Organizational Change, 2025, pp 292-317 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Climate change poses critical challenges to the agri-food sector, threatening global food security and sustainability. Despite its significance, existing studies provide fragmented insights, with limited focus on comprehensive frameworks addressing perception, impacts, mitigation solutions, and measurement tools. This chapter conducts a systematic review of 52 studies published between 2003 and 2023, drawing on data from Scopus and Web of Science databases and employing a mixed-methods approach. The analysis categorizes findings into four thematic areas: awareness, impact assessment, mitigation strategies, and decision-making tools. The results highlight regional disparities in awareness and adaptive capacity, significant variability in climate impacts, and the underutilization of socio-environmental accounting practices for effective mitigation. Socio-environmental accountability emerges as critical for integrating mitigation strategies, improving decision-making, and enhancing resilience. Future research should prioritize innovative technologies and field-based studies in underrepresented regions to better address the complexities of climate change and support sustainable agricultural productivity and food security.
