SpaceX: occupy Boca Chica then Mars?

Chapter 4 in Cases on Corporate Entrepreneurship in North America, 2025, pp 38-47 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This case relates the story of the growth of SpaceX, a company pursuing a goal of taking people to Mars to inhabit the planet, and the controversies occasioned by the launching of its rockets from Boca Chica, Texas. The first controversy occurred when SpaceX negotiated with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department in 2021 to swap 477 acres that SpaceX owned adjacent to Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge for 43 acres of Boca Chica State Park. The company had been partnering with NASA to develop a Crew Transportation System. However, after the failure of the company's April 2023 launch, environmentalists filed a lawsuit against the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for failure to require an environmental impact study before the launch. SpaceX was faced with the task of developing a strategy to deal with the concerns of the complainants at Boca Chica.
