Peloton exercise bike: sliding off the road?
Marlene M. Reed-Hislop
Chapter 6 in Cases on Corporate Entrepreneurship in North America, 2025, pp 58-63 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This case is about the rapid growth of the Peloton exercise bike in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and the closing of the economy, and its fast decline at the time the country was opened up again. During COVID-19, the Peloton stock rose from $17 to $110 per share and then fell to $3.43 by July of 2024. The history of the company is recounted, the devastating effect the pandemic had on world economies is reviewed, and the state of the gym and exercise equipment industry in 2024 is discussed. The dilemma of the Peloton board in deciding how to react to the decline is the question posed in the case.
