Shopify: the anti-Amazon or Amazon partner?

Patricia M. Norman

Chapter 9 in Cases on Corporate Entrepreneurship in North America, 2025, pp 87-98 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Amazon launched Buy with Prime in April 2022. Buy with Prime allows merchants to add a “Buy with Prime” button next to individual products on their own websites. When Amazon Prime customers click on a “Buy with Prime” button, the product is added to an Amazon shopping cart and customers can check out with their Amazon Prime account. This eases customer purchases because buyers do not have to enter address and payment information already stored in their Prime accounts to purchase items directly from a merchant's website. Prime customers are also eligible for Prime shipping and returns. The case is set in 2022, after the launch of Amazon Prime. Shopify provides software that allows companies to set up and run their own retail websites. Shopify is often referred to as the anti-Amazon. To date, Shopify has prohibited its merchants from integrating the Buy with Prime feature into websites developed using Shopify software. The dilemma posed in the case is whether Shopify should rescind its prohibition on Buy with Prime that the company has imposed on its merchants.
