Learn about local cultures and use 'the system'

.

Chapter 10 in How to be an Academic Superhero, 2023, pp 55-57 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter emphasizes the importance of understanding and embracing local cultures within academic institutions. Cultural norms shape behaviour and productivity standards, impacting individual success. Academic leaders must adapt to local systems and cultures to avoid clashes. Universities are complex systems with internal rules and external regulations and familiarizing oneself with institutional policies and procedures, along with cultural characteristics, guides professional development. Understanding various systems, such as grant-funding organizations and promotion procedures, enables effective work while maintaining respect. Awareness of institutional policies helps address issues like harassment, discrimination, corruption and maladministration. This knowledge ensures a successful career.
