Chapter 17 in How to be an Academic Superhero, 2023, pp 101-111 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the importance of time management for academic success and work-life balance. In the context of increasing demands and distractions, effective time management strategies are crucial for academics, and the chapter emphasizes the need to plan weekly and daily schedules, set realistic goals, prioritize tasks, maintain focus and minimize distractions while also highlighting the significance of rest, self-care and periodic reassessment of time management strategies. The chapter provides a comprehensive table of time management strategies for academics to implement, including goal setting, planning, prioritization, scheduling and problem-solving. Additionally, it discusses the myth of working long hours and advocates for working efficiently and logging work hours to maximize productivity. It concludes by addressing the issue of unpaid work and the importance of valuing one’s time.
