Chapter 20 in How to be an Academic Superhero, 2023, pp 135-138 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the significance of speaking about one’s work as an academic and provides guidance on how to be an academic superhero in public speaking. It emphasizes the various career-supporting opportunities that arise from speaking at public fora and conferences, such as promoting research, receiving feedback, refining ideas, establishing professional relationships and staying updated with new developments in the field. The chapter also highlights the benefits of engaging with the media and offers advice on developing media engagement skills. Furthermore, it stresses the importance of taking every speaking opportunity seriously, as even seemingly inconsequential presentations can leave a lasting impression. The chapter concludes by discussing the careful selection of conferences and the value of participating in special sessions or organizing events to contribute to journal collections or edited books. It reminds academics to actively network and socialize during conferences to expand their professional contacts.
