Join or start a research team
.
Chapter 23 in How to be an Academic Superhero, 2023, pp 148-151 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the advantages of joining or forming a research team in academia. While working alone is common in humanities, arts and social sciences (HASS), being part of a research team promotes long-term progress and learning. Research teams vary in composition but share a commitment to a common research goal. Although more prevalent in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), teams are valuable in HASS for tackling complex problems with diverse perspectives. Benefits include access to new tools and skills, an international outlook, increased research outputs and stronger grant opportunities. However, it is crucial to form teams with compatible personalities and effective management. Despite challenges, team-based research is compelling, and practical guidance exists for creating and managing effective teams.
