Abstract: Teaching well is not only a measure of academic success but also a challenging and rewarding experience. It requires presenting oneself and ideas to large and small groups, often leading to personal scrutiny and anxiety. Research on effective university teaching reveals that subject mastery alone is insufficient. Good teachers treat teaching as an intellectual endeavour, set high expectations for student achievement, create a critical learning environment, trust students and engage in self-assessment. While numerous resources are available on effective teaching, obtaining a teaching qualification can further demonstrate a commitment to high-quality teaching. Such qualifications provide evidence of engagement in improving teaching, facilitate networking with teaching-interested colleagues, shed light on teaching principles and techniques, and accelerate the development of teaching confidence and effectiveness. A teaching qualification can also serve as a stepping stone to management and leadership roles in academia.
