Find a voluntary role
.
Chapter 26 in How to be an Academic Superhero, 2023, pp 168-172 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the benefits of incorporating voluntary roles into an academic career. Despite time constraints and the need to prioritize publications, profession-related volunteer work can contribute to both career success and personal fulfilment. Volunteering provides opportunities for altruism, skill development, professional experience enhancement and social networking. It offers a respite from the demands of academia while enabling individuals to make a positive impact on communities and open doors to enriching opportunities. Volunteering can expand personal and professional networks, potentially leading to job prospects and collaborations. Additionally, it allows academics to contribute to society on a broader scale, such as through organizations like Academics Without Borders. The chapter also discusses the value of service roles, including editorial board memberships and leadership positions within learned societies and scholarly associations. Ultimately, volunteering presents a pathway to subjective career success, life satisfaction and societal contributions.
