Consider consulting

.

Chapter 27 in How to be an Academic Superhero, 2023, pp 173-176 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the incorporation of consulting into academic careers, highlighting the benefits and challenges it presents. Many scholars embrace consulting to extend their experience, expand networks, contribute to the community and earn significant financial rewards. Consulting opportunities span various disciplines, including humanities, arts and social sciences. Consulting is not limited to established scholars; even those in precarious employment can use it to secure additional income. The chapter discusses the avenues for finding consulting work, such as personal networks, the internet and university commercialization arms. It also presents examples of global and web-centred consulting opportunities. However, consulting has costs and challenges, including managing conflicts of interest, time allocation, colleagues’ reactions, and the need for business and legal skills. The chapter concludes by addressing considerations related to data ownership, impartiality, confidentiality and potential conflicts with other funding sources.
