Chapter 29 in How to be an Academic Superhero, 2023, pp 181-184 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter emphasizes the significance of performance reviews as a means to preserve and enhance academic capabilities. While universities have formalized various review processes, such as student and peer evaluations of teaching, research assessments and annual performance reviews, these evaluations often face inherent problems and may lose their meaning over time. Nonetheless, they can serve as formative assessment tools for professional development. The chapter highlights the importance of student evaluations of teaching (SETs) and provides advice on how to respond to them effectively. It suggests focusing on recurring themes, considering possible reasons for negativity and making constructive changes based on feedback. Additionally, the chapter encourages academics to conduct their own appraisals and engage in scholarship related to teaching. It concludes by recommending 360-degree reviews for academic managers to address management issues and enhance interpersonal communication skills.
