 Take sabbatical. Chapter 30 in How to be an Academic Superhero, 2023, pp 185-190 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: This chapter explores the concept of sabbatical leave, examining its benefits, challenges and practical considerations. Despite budget constraints, some universities and research organizations continue to offer sabbaticals as opportunities for academic staff to focus on professional development and personal well-being. Sabbaticals, typically lasting six months to a year, often involve work at another institution, providing scholars with a change of environment and a chance for rejuvenation. However, eligibility criteria and competition for sabbaticals are increasing, limiting access for non-tenured staff. The chapter emphasizes the need for realistic expectations and careful planning, as scholars may face exhaustion, unmet objectives and unexpected difficulties during their sabbatical. It highlights the importance of disengaging from everyday pressures and offers practical advice on managing teaching responsibilities, personal arrangements, funding opportunities, tax implications and reporting requirements.
