Chapter 33 in How to be an Academic Superhero, 2023, pp 199-202 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In the digital age, academics have become public figures with their personal and professional lives exposed to a wide audience. Maintaining a positive public reputation is crucial for academics, as their actions and online presence can be easily scrutinized by students, colleagues and the general public. This chapter explores the challenges posed by social media, email communications and academic networking platforms, highlighting the potential risks and consequences of a compromised public reputation. It offers practical strategies for preserving an online reputation, such as managing privacy settings, safeguarding passwords and being mindful of the content shared online. Additionally, the chapter discusses the impact of online namesakes and the need to differentiate oneself from others with similar identities. By being vigilant and thoughtful in their online conduct, academics can safeguard their public image and protect their professional standing.
