Stay happy and healthy
.
Chapter 34 in How to be an Academic Superhero, 2023, pp 203-207 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter emphasizes the importance of staying happy and healthy for academic career success. While genetic character and external circumstances play a role in individual happiness, beliefs and behaviours also significantly impact one’s well-being. Autonomy, mastery and purpose are highlighted as crucial foundations of motivation and happiness, often overlooked by traditional views. Maintaining these foundations becomes challenging due to changes in universities that diminish them. To safeguard autonomy, academics may need to reconsider their outlook or seek alternative employment. Developing and deepening relationships, helping others and entering a state of flow are identified as key behavioural tactics for happiness. Balancing engagement and isolation through effective time management strategies can resolve the tension between social interaction and finding flow. Finally, the chapter emphasizes the importance of celebrating teaching and research successes as a source of joy and motivation in academic careers.
