Manage disruptions, interruptions and transitions successfully

.

Chapter 35 in How to be an Academic Superhero, 2023, pp 208-221 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter addresses the challenges of managing disruptions, interruptions and transitions in academic careers, particularly in the arts, social sciences and humanities. It critiques the prevailing idealized model of an academic career that neglects scholars’ precarious employment conditions and personal complexities. The chapter emphasizes the importance of recognizing life events such as pregnancy, childrearing, bereavement and mental illness as significant disruptions rather than mere inconveniences. It also highlights the personal and professional challenges associated with moving between academic positions and the need to adapt to new contexts. The chapter provides insights into successful management strategies, including seeking support from colleagues, friends and family, as well as advisers and mentors. It acknowledges the need for institutional and cultural changes to better accommodate scholars’ diverse experiences and challenges.
