Mentors provide guidance, psychosocial support, and facilitate career development for early career scholars. They offer valuable insights on work-life balance, goal-setting, navigating departmental dynamics and professional networking. Formal mentoring programmes connect junior and senior academics, fostering personal and professional growth. However, mentoring can have drawbacks, including potential conflicts and time commitments. Peer mentoring groups can also become excessively negative. Despite these considerations, mentors contribute to emotional well-being and impart essential skills, knowledge and networks. Seeking advice from diverse sources, including PhD advisers, senior colleagues, and peers, further enhances one’s career trajectory. This chapter encourages early-career scholars to explore mentorship opportunities and build supportive networks for academic advancement.
