Abstract:
Artificial intelligence has the potential to bring numerous benefits to the transport sector, including increased efficiency, safety, and sustainability. However, the ethical implications of AI in transport, particularly autonomous vehicles (AVs), must also be carefully considered. One major ethical concern is the potential for biased outcomes due to machine learning algorithms being trained on biased data. There is also the issue of accountability in decision-making by AI, particularly in the event of a road crash involving an AV. There are also moral dilemmas that may arise, such as an AV needing to choose between avoiding a pedestrian at the risk of endangering its passengers. Ensuring the safety and reliability of AI systems, as well as protecting data privacy and security, are also practical considerations. There are various approaches to addressing the ethical considerations of AI in transport, such as applying utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics. This chapter uses a systematic literature review approach to uncover knowledge on this complex topic and provides a reference for future research to ensure that AI in transport is developed and used ethically and responsibly.
