Abstract:
This chapter looks at a variety of issues relating to measurement and scaling. It begins with the notion of measurement and the rationale behind the measurement process. Next, it distinguishes between conceptual and operational definitions and follows this with a discussion of the different types of measurement scales. Finally, it discusses different scaling formats and the concept of measurement error, emphasizing the notions of measurement validity and reliability.
