The Africa rising narrative: economic growth, the terms of trade, structural change, and global uneven development

Abstract: It has recently been argued that sub-Saharan Africa has experienced very strong growth performance from the late 1990s and especially in the 2000s, and that this performance implies a rosy future for Africa, North–South convergence, and a reduction in global economic inequality. This chapter briefly reviews sub-Saharan Africa's growth and development performance and explanations for this performance, focusing on terms-of-trade movements examined with a theoretical North–South model and empirical analysis. It finally discusses the prospects of sustained growth and development by examining structural change involving the sectoral composition of production.
