Reflecting on editorial transitions: the case of Modern Chinese Literature and Culture

Kirk A. Denton

Chapter 18 in How to Edit and Manage a Successful Scholarly Journal, 2024, pp 193-201 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, Kirk Denton discusses some of his experiences editing the journal Modern Chinese Literature and Culture (MCLC). The journal was founded in 1984 and is the oldest journal dedicated to English-language scholarship on modern Chinese literature. Denton edited the journal from 1999 to 2021. He first gives a brief overview of the journal - its history, scholarly scope, and some of the challenges faced over the years - and then focuses on the transition, beginning in 2020, to a new editorial team based at Edinburgh University. He describes the process of working with the editorial board to select the new editors, emphasises the importance of succession planning and discusses the pros and cons of moving the journal from an in-house operation at The Ohio State University to a large university press (Edinburgh University Press).
