Why edit a journal?

Dallen J. Timothy

Chapter 2 in How to Edit and Manage a Successful Scholarly Journal, 2024, pp 9-18 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Scholarly journals play a crucial role in disseminating knowledge throughout the academy and to practitioners on the ground. The hope of every journal editor should be to influence not only other academic work, but also public discourse and policy-making through the papers published in their outlet. This chapter will examine the rationale for starting a new journal and the challenges associated with this undertaking. The chapter will provide a broad perspective on these and several other issues and will use the Journal of Heritage Tourism as an empirical example to show the rationale process, the justification for a new journal, the proposal writing (getting a publisher) process, seeking a well-qualified editorial board, selecting the types of papers to fit within the scope of the journal, getting the journal off the ground, and how the life-cycle of a journal can change from its foundation to its broadening and adaptation to contemporary technologies and ‘alternative’ research forms.
