Rebound and renewal: strategies and tactics for journal revitalisation

Jay Gatrell, Nancy Hoalst-Pullen and Mark W. Patterson

Chapter 8 in How to Edit and Manage a Successful Scholarly Journal, 2024, pp 79-95 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Journal editors must balance speed with quality in an era driven by an increasing need for published content handled with greater transparency within multichannel (albeit predominately online) publishing environments. As editors of a (once) underperforming peer review journal, we recognise the opportunities and challenges of managing the peer review process for both 1,000 manuscript submissions per annum. This chapter highlights seven actions that can benefit a journal’s citation index, among other factors, which directly and indirectly shape the status of a journal. Specifically, these seven actions are: (1) (re)defining, advancing, and enlivening the journal’s mission and scope; (2) establishing, expanding, and emphasising editors and the editorial board; (3) attracting submissions, including special issues, collections, and related publications; (4) adopting innovative pathways early and often; (5) managing peer reviews, reviewers, and timely decisions; (6) representing the underrepresented; and (7) assessing the outcomes of (your) editorial actions.
