Chapter 9 in How to Edit and Manage a Successful Scholarly Journal, 2024, pp 97-107 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
There are many opportunities for editors and authors to interact productively towards improvement of manuscripts. The chapter presents the relationship between journal editor and author as mutually reinforcing with a shared aim of improving the quality of the finished article and the reputation of the journal. Based on advice compiled by our late colleague, Martin Haigh, as guidance for authors in the Journal of Geography in Higher Education, we present a series of ground rules for authors seeking to publish. This provides a framework for helping authors to focus on writing which is useful, interesting and rigorous; relevant to the scope of the target journal and its audience; fits within the community of discourse of the journal and respects its mission. We consider how editors can provide constructive feedback at all stages of the peer review process, emphasising the importance for authors to address reviewer comments seriously and systematically.
