The art experience triad: conceptual underpinnings and implications

Pekka Saarikorpi and Kristina Heinonen

Chapter 4 in Handbook of Service Experience, 2025, pp 37-53 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: While previous service research has looked at art at a metaphorical level or through peripheral services, a deeper exploration of the art experience has not received equal interest. In response, this chapter deepens the notion of art in the service experience. The chapter aims to conceptualise the art experience as a function of the artwork, the individual and the context, and distinguished by the aesthetic, participatory and technological perspectives. This is done by reviewing aesthetics and its various approaches to the art experience while describing the shift from passive and active audiences to more interactive participation realised in participatory art practices and technologically enhanced artscapes. In doing so, the chapter contributes to the conceptual understanding of the art experience in the context of art institutions (e.g., museums, concert halls, theatre) and as a representation of the service experience.
