Chapter 11 in How to Get Published in the Best Tourism Journals, 2024, pp 149-167 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter is a reflexive, critical exploration of gender (in)equality in academic published work generally, and in tourism. Underpinned by feminism, I approach this from two perspectives - the extent of gender parity, and gender as a subject of study in tourism research publications. Three key observations emerge - first, the lack of agreement in the general academic community on the nature and extent of gender (in)equality in academic publications and discrepancies about its causes. Second, limited research exists in tourism on the gendered nature of academic publications and where this exists there is evidence of a gender gap that is deleterious to women, albeit this is decreasing. Third, gender remains a relatively marginal subject within published work in tourism which also often fails to manifest the influence of colonialism and the intersection between gender and race. This has implications for tourism knowledge production which, I suggest, is still colonial.
