Publishing in special issues

Dallen J. Timothy

Chapter 9 in How to Get Published in the Best Tourism Journals, 2024, pp 122-131 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter examines journal special issues (SIsSIs) as an important outlet for academic research. It describes what is entailed in the development and production of SIs and highlights the advantages and benefits of themed issues for journal publishers, guest editors, and individual scholars. For journals, the main benefits are a greater association with a specific line of inquiry, an increased talent pool, additional revenue, improved impact metrics, and a heightened brand awareness. Guest editors gain name recognition, greater familiarity with a subject, and broader scholarly networks. Authors have the most to gain, including associating with established scholars, name recognition, contributing to current thinking, and increasing personal standing in the field. The chapter also mentions some of the perceived challenges associated with SIs, including concerns over quality and nepotism. However, the chapter encourages emerging scholars to consider how the value and benefits of publishing in SIs outweigh any criticisms that might be levied against them.
