Silent suffering: LGBTQ+ intimate partner violence unveiled
Esra Ummak
Chapter 5 in Research Handbook on Domestic Violence and Abuse, 2024, pp 62-76 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Based on an intersectional approach, the chapter will highlight how having multiple minority positions may inform and affect the way LGBTQ+ individuals experience intimate partner violence (IPV). The chapter will elaborate on how heteronormativity and internalized heteronormativity create unique vulnerabilities of IPV among LGBTQ+ individuals and provide implications for mental health professionals who work with and advocate for this population. The chapter will also discuss how intersecting identities relating to immigration, racial/ethnic minority status, and sexual/gender minority status may create particular vulnerabilities related to IPV.
