The genesis of the Decent Work Agenda

Abstract: This chapter presents the origin of the Decent Work Agenda (DWA), a set of highly relevant themes for promoting and achieving decent work (DW). The DWA can also be understood as a guiding instrument for political and economic decision-making proposed by the International Labor Organization (ILO). Its relation with the search for fair globalization is presented; additionally, its connection with the DW notion emergence within the ILO and other important instruments and agendas such as the Global Compact and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs, from 2000 to 2015) and later, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, from 2015 to 2030). This essay is based on declarations, recommendations, conventions, and other ILO documents documentary analysis, and academic works contextualizing the setting in which these documents arise with historical facts and developments in the world of work. In the end, DW’s relations with peace are discussed, and perspectives for the future are presented.
