Abstract:
Two major quakes hit Southeastern Turkey and Northwest Syria on February 6, 2023, and another on February 20, 2023. Soon after, massive floods hit the region on March 15, 2023. Exacerbated by unenforced building codes and an uncoordinated slow-moving rescue response by an increasingly authoritarian Erdogan administration, the death toll exceeds 50,000 with 6600 of these refugees from the civil war in Syria. Our focus will be on the 1.66 million Syrian refugees in the quake zone and the socio-political impact on their lives in the context of the national and local economy. We will evaluate policy prescriptions, including the UN's Turkey Compact aiming to improve conditions for refugees and host communities via preferential trade agreements with the EU, the US, and Canada. We aim to develop pointers for governments, NGOs, international organizations, refugees, and host communities towards enhanced integration and improved livelihoods.
