The re-organisation of economy, politics and gender equality in post-socialist Europe
Aleksandra Kanjuo-Mrčela
Chapter 1 in Handbook on Politics and Society, 2025, pp 17-34 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter provides insight into different accounts of the economic, political, and social changes that occurred in the countries of former socialist Europe at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries. It shows how the transition, which was embedded in the global economic and political order, affected economic and political structures and the lives of women and men in post-socialist Europe. The chapter pays specific attention to the gender dimension of transition and the different interpretations of the impact of transition on gender equality. The chapter concludes by considering the future of post-transition Central and Eastern European countries, focusing on theorising and mobilising for alternatives to patriarchal capitalist totalitarianism that is harming the lives of people across the globe.
