Introduction on compliance

Chapter 60 in EU Banking and Financial Regulation, 2024, pp 566-568 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Like terrorism financing, money laundering constitutes an enduring challenge to the integrity of the European Union (EU) financial system and economy. The fight against money laundering and terrorism financing has therefore been an important part of the European Union political agenda. Over the past 30 years, the EU has developed a regulatory framework, which is closely aligned with the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the international standard setter on anti-money laundering (AML) and countering the financing of terrorism (CFT). EU AML legislation is so far mainly based on directives, which have provided the Member States considerable leeway for their transposition into their own national laws.
