Social determinants of health in Continental Europe and the relevance of migration

Abstract: Social determinants of health (SDOH) have gained special attention within the European welfare state models that are based on being sensitive to the unequal distribution of resources, on easing the effects of disadvantages, and striving for universal access to healthcare. Since the 1960s, Europe’s economies have built on migrant labour to sustain their welfare models. In the 2020s, an ageing Europe is further building its future on migration, being demographically and economically dependent on people immigrating to Europe. Migration has become an important topic in the debate and should be recognized as a social determinant in its own right. Migration is vital for sustaining access to healthcare for the overall population in times of global shortage of healthcare personnel. Therefore, migration can be seen as a social determinant of health for an overall population. Migration is one of the main challenges for Continental Europe to manage to ensure health for all.
