Why are repos so huge in Brazil?

Flávia Félix Barbosa and Fabio Terra

Chapter 2 in Central Banking, Monetary Policy and Financial In/Stability, 2025, pp 18-34 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This article analyzes the evolution of the repurchase agreement (repos) operations of the Central Bank of Brazil, which had a sharp growth from 2002 to 2020. The method of analysis is the decomposition of each factor that conditions repos. This method permits us to point out the factors that greatly contributed to the remarkable increase in the repos’ stock over the period in analysis. The conclusions show that the single factor that added most to the growth of repos in Brazil was the interest payment on them made by the Brazilian Central Bank.
