Abstract:
The most active agent bringing change to our world is our planet's 8+ billion human beings. The cities that people build, their settlement and migration patterns, their birth rates and health, and their transportation and economic systems, all happen in space and time and can be better understood through spatial and holistic thinking. The connections of population to other themes covered in this book are explored, including natural resources, natural hazards, climate, and cultural and physical regions. Population change, distribution, and demographic characteristics of the population will be examined through interactive maps, 3D globes, cartograms, population pyramids, tables, and visualizations in a GIS environment. Teaching core content about past and present patterns of migration, land cover change, the Human Development Index, median age and income, and other population themes will be realized through powerful but easy-to-implement lessons from local to global scales built upon engaging maps and visualizations.
