Teaching physical regions with GIS

Abstract: The physical environment in all of its forms, including climate, biomes, landforms, ocean currents and ocean ecology, sea ice, and other characteristics occur in patterns across the world, change over time, and can be better understood through spatial thinking. Physical regions will be examined at scales from local to global, and physical patterns on, under, and over the surface of the Earth will be mapped and studied through GIS. Physical regions reflect and in turn influence other themes in this book, including cultural regions, economics, natural resources, weather, natural hazards, and events. Physical regions will be studied through 2D maps, 3D globes, elevation profiles, tables, and visualizations. Teaching core content about physical aspects of our world will be realized through powerful but easy-to-implement lessons at multiple scales and across multiple themes on the Earth and even on Mars, built upon interactive and engaging tools.
