Abstract:
Weather is one of the most dynamic and rapidly changing phenomena of our planet, deeply impacting humans and all other life. Temperature, pressure, wind, precipitation, and weather events occur in specific patterns across the world, change by the minute, day, season, and over the longer term, and can be better understood through spatial thinking. Weather characteristics and events will be examined at scales from local to regional to global and will be mapped and studied through GIS. Connections between weather and other themes in this book—physical regions, climate, economics, behavior, settlement, and equity, will be explored. Weather will be studied through maps, 3D globes, imagery, data, and visualizations such as dashboards through GIS. Teaching about the world's weather will be realized through powerful, easy-to-implement lessons touching multiple themes. These lessons include mapping weather conditions, investigating tornadoes, calculating snowfall, analyzing temperature extremes, and other engaging activities.
