Abstract: Natural hazards deeply and increasingly impact humans and other life forms on the planet on a daily basis. Wildfires, hurricanes, landslides, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, floods, and other hazards occur in specific patterns across the world and can be better understood through spatial, holistic thinking. Natural hazard characteristics and events will be examined at scales from local to regional to global and will be mapped and studied through GIS. Connections between hazards and other themes in this book—human settlement, economics, behavior, weather, climate, physical regions, current events, and equity, will be explored. Hazards will be studied through interactive maps, 3D globes, imagery, data, and visualizations through GIS. Teaching about natural hazards will be realized through powerful, easy-to-implement activities touching multiple themes. These activities include visualizing earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, past and current wildfires, areas facing multiple hazards, and other engaging activities.
