Abstract: COVID-19 made painfully clear the longstanding connections between geography, GIS, and health. Human health and wellness and patterns of disease, life expectancy, and other health variables will be examined through spatial thinking in this chapter. Issues of equity, including historical redlining and current access to health and human services, the internet, and other societal benefits, and environmental justice issues and patterns such as toxic waste sites will be explored through GIS methods, tools, and investigating data quality. Connections between health, equity, environmental justice, and other themes in this book—human settlement, economics, behavior, natural hazards, cultural regions, and current events will be investigated. Through interactive maps, 3D globes, imagery, data, and visualizations, equity, access, and justice themes will be analyzed through powerful, easy-to-implement lessons, including housing, flood risk, voting and redistricting, access, crowdsourcing, air pollution, and other activities designed for thoughtful inquiry and an eye toward taking action.
