Introduction to The Rise of Algorithmic Society and the Strategic Role of Arts and Culture

.

Chapter 1 in The Rise of Algorithmic Society and the Strategic Role of Arts and Culture, 2023, pp 1-5 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The chapter gives an overview of the context scenario in which the different elements of the book will be discussed. It introduces the transformation society is experiencing with the advent of the digital revolution and the rise of algorithms. This transformation involves different dimensions, from economy to society and culture, also enclosing a change in decision-making processes, heuristics and scientific methods. A new humanology emerges in which the relationship between man and machine is still to be defined. After defining the book’s aim, the chapter describes the narrative methodology for discussing the rise of the algorithmic society and the new artificial intelligence tools, the economic and social changes they have brought, and the role of culture in facing emerging challenges.
