Technology and culture in digital transformation: a narrative of the future
.
Chapter 4 in The Rise of Algorithmic Society and the Strategic Role of Arts and Culture, 2023, pp 62-96 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The chapter discusses the effects of technological transformation on culture and cultural and creative sectors, highlighting opportunities and threats for drawing up a future research agenda. It identifies a new phase in the relationship between culture, economy, society and technology: the conservation and technological enhancement of culture. In this new scenario, the chapter highlights the necessity to enhance and protect the values of diversity - artistic, human, cultural, and environmental - and the strategic role of territories - anchors of reality or territories of the mind. They should be the crucial elements for a new model of sustainable development based on culture. The chapter concludes with a reflection on the power of culture and imagination as a weapon against the technological revolution’s future challenges for society.
