Chapter 16 in Institutions of Global Governance, 2025, pp 303-315 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter emphasises an institutional approach to global governance, highlighting the evolving complexity of international institutions. While traditional analyses focus on state-centric models, we argue for a broader perspective that considers the interplay of formal and informal institutions, trans-governmental networks, and public–private partnerships. Global governance is increasingly characterised by fluidity and decentralisation, where international organisations, non-state actors, and hybrid structures shape policymaking. By examining institutional stability, adaptability, and legitimacy, we explore how governance frameworks evolve to address global challenges. The chapter concludes by identifying key trends in institutionalisation, emphasising the need for further research on governance transformations in a multipolar world.
