Inequality and COVID-19

Kenneth A. Couch

Chapter Chapter 1 in Handbook on Inequality and COVID-19, 2025, pp 1-13 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides an introduction to the Handbook on Inequality and COVID-19. The chapters of the Handbook each contain original research on the impacts of COVID-19 on inequality during the arrival of the pandemic and after. Each is written by a different group of co-authors. The chapters are organized topically to consider fundamental questions asked by everyone who lived through the pandemic regarding impacts on health, the labor market, and education. The chapters also discuss the larger body of research on the issues each examines. The research contained in the volume is motivated by fundamental questions asked by everyone who lived through this period. Major durable impacts of the pandemic uncovered by the research in this volume are discussed and a brief preview of each of the chapters is also provided. The volume contains the work of more than 60 researchers representing almost as many institutions.
