Abstract:
We investigate trends in the health and well-being of preschool-aged children (ages 2-5) during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our empirical methodology compares children during and after the pandemic to those before, conditioning on demographic covariates and seasonality. Using a large, nationally representative survey, the National Health Interview Survey, we show that the pandemic corresponds to increases in disability status and associated measures of social difficulties. We show larger effects for children from more vulnerable socio-economic backgrounds. We also show some recovery as the pandemic ended, though there is an ongoing decline in the use of preventative health care for preschool-aged children as measured by getting flu shots.
