Daryl Powell, David Romero, Jiju Antony and Paolo Gaiardelli

Chapter 13 in A Research Agenda for Lean Management, 2024, pp 215-226 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: There is a growing appreciation among academics and practitioners of the need to understand how digitalization can be successfully integrated with the principles and practices of lean production to further improve the efficiency and competitiveness of manufacturing organizations. The authors present a state-of-the-art perspective on digital lean manufacturing (DLM) and present a description of the emerging concept of Lean 4.0 – its benefits and challenges. They develop a coherent concept of the emergent Lean 4.0 ideal, providing readers with an outline for future research in this exciting, nascent field.
